A few years ago on the way to a Chickamauga Cherokee tribal meeting, my husband and I stopped at a rest-stop just inside the Missouri state line. As we took a little walk to stretch our legs from the long ride in from central Oklahoma, we encountered a rather dapper yuppie couple walking a pair of teeny-tiny terriers. Seriously, the leashes weighed more than the dogs! After the couple passed, my husband gave a derisive snort and mumbled: “Oh, look. Rats on a string.” As soon as we got back in the car (and I stopped chortling), I pulled the ever-present steno-pad from my purse and jotted down a few notes. A few months later, that “rat on a string” comment made it into my historical paranormal romance novel, PRAIRIE FIRE, as Teacup the Chihuahua. Which just goes to show you that it’s unwise to do or say anything in the vicinity of an author, as you never know what might wind up in the next novel.

Several years ago I joined a local kung fu kwoon briefly for two reasons: (1) to learn just enough martial arts for basic defense and long-term health maintenance, and (2) to do research for a novel. That novel became the paranormal romance, MUSK RAIN. And, as it turned out, I was pretty good at the rudimentary physics of martial arts. Wait–physics? Well, yes. Martial arts is all about physics. Trajectory, applied force, gravity, and mass. It was a whole lot like many of the chores I had performed growing up on a farm. How does a 5’7″ 125-lb woman kick a 6’1″ 200-lb guy halfway across the room? Actually, the same way one kicks a 400-lb steer out of the way to keep it from tackling you for a feed bucket. The first time we practiced one of these truly effective kicks, a teacher asked me to try it on him. I asked: “Are you sure?” He just scowled and waved me forward. Okay, if you insist. Yep, I kicked the guy halfway across the room where he landed with a satisfactory thud against an unforgiving cinderblock wall. He scrambled to his feet with a truly murderous look in his eyes and asked in a snarl: “Where the #$*& did you learn to kick like that?” I just shrugged and answered: “Working cattle on an Oklahoma farm.”

Peacocks in Oklahoma? Well, yes. We have peacocks in Oklahoma. They are not native, of course, but seem to like Oklahoma just fine.

When I was a kid growing up on a farm in rural Oklahoma, we had a pair of nesting peacocks. I loved the silly things. They were very sweet and would sit on your lap for as long as you scratched their necks. They did, however, take an unauthorized flight (yes, they fly–like B52 bombers, in fact) to the nearby town of Sparks, where their calls wreaked havoc on the revival meeting in progress at the local Assembly of God Church. True story. We even made the local newspaper.

A few years ago when we decided to produce some children’s picture books at Dragonfly Publishing, Inc. under the new Kittycat books label, I wrote a tale called Pete, the Peacock, Goes to Town in homage to that fateful day our peacock and peahen (i.e. the boy and the girl) decided to frighten the Holiness out of the good country church-folk.

The artist for that book, Chet Taylor, had so much fun illustrating the book that last year he asked it we could do another. In 2011, Chet and I put out Pete, the Peacock, Goes to the Zoo. When I was a kid (which admittedly was about an eon ago) the Oklahoma City Zoo had lots of free-roaming peacocks of many colorful variations. I used to walk the zoo just to follow the peacocks, because I loved them so much. So a second Pete, the Peacock book seemed a good fit for that positive zoo experience.

Well, a few years back, grass fires spread through southwestern Oklahoma City. One affected area contained an old farm that kept the bright teal-colored peacocks like the ones we had on the farm. In fact, my husband and I used to live just down the road in one of the housing editions that over the years had sprung up around this old farm and its huge barn full of peacocks. I probably was the only person in the neighborhood who enjoyed waiting on the peacocks to cross the highway at 6:30 in the morning.

Anyway, back to the fires. My husband and I were watching the news of the fires and saw a reporter camped in front of that peacock barn near where we used to live. My heart skipped a few beats in worry, until I saw an army of blessed do-gooders rushing in to save the peacocks. After some fairly effective “chicken herding,” all but one of the peacocks had been scooted into a waiting truck. Well, one burly guy decided he would run down that pesky peafowl and “grab him.” Yep, you guessed it. With the evening news on live broadcast, this guy grabbed that thirty-pound panicky male peacock by the FEET. In response, the peacock spread his six-feet wide wings, lifted his body into the air, and stared flapping with unrivaled fury.

Like brass cymbals cranked into overdrive, the tips of those strong wings clapped repeatedly against the sides of his would-be rescuer’s head. Whap–whap–whap!!! A few seconds later the guy fell back onto the ground, but was still holding onto the peacock’s feet. Whap–whap–whap!!! Finally, the guy let go and the peacock, none the worse for wear, flew into the truck to join its fellow peafowl.

Word of warning folks: You move a peacock by grabbing it from behind and wrapping your hands under its belly. You never run at it face-on and grab it’s feet. Unless, of course, you LIKE being beaten to death by six-foot wide wings. In that case, knock yourself out!

AS a writer and an editor, I must admit that at the end of most days I take a short escape into the world of movies and television via DVDs and on-air broadcasts. Even then I cannot help but mentally “edit” the plots unfolding before me on the television screen. Occupational hazzard, I suppose. Or maybe it’s just the way an editor’s mind works. Examining plot arcs for fun is one thing, but some authors these days are getting so absorbed in video that they are mixing screenplay elements with novel technique. In my opinion, that is a mistake. When I read a book, I am looking for a certain experience in the way the scenes are presented and the plot unfolds. When I watch a movie, I expect a different type of experience. A movie is not a book, and a book is not a movie. Yes, a book can be made into a movie with the necessary adaptations, and screenplays can be rendered into novel form (of sorts). It is true that modern authors must write for today’s techno-savvy audience, which means holding POV (point-of-view), adhering to accepted dialog construction, and keeping a much quicker action pace than was expected of literature just a few decades ago. However, authors must not lose sight of the fact that books are not movies. Readers read books for a specific depth of experience that can be had in no other storytelling format. When I read a book or a manuscript that attempts to “mimic” a movie, I heave a great sigh and go look for a REAL book to read.
